Manage Polls in WebCenter Portal

Portal Tools and Services is a set of technologies that you can use inside your portal, enrich it with Enterprise 2.0 capabilities. Polls is one of this tecnologies. It enables you to create, edit and manage polls inside your application.

According Andrew McAfee, “Enterprise 2.0 is the use of emergent social software platforms within companies, or between companies and their partners or customers”.

In this post, I will create, manage, and analyze polls at runtime in WebCenter Portal 11.1.1.8.

Go to WebCenter Portal, and log in using the weblogic user.
To go ahead, you must create a new portal.
In the Portal main menu, choose the Portal you have created.

In the Home page, to enter page Edit mode use the following keyboard shortcut:

ctrl + shift + E

Quick Poll

Quick Poll task flow creates a quick one-question poll.

In the Catalog, click on Polls, and then add a Quick Poll component on the page.
Click the Design Poll button, create a poll and click OK.

To test, click the Save button, and then click the View Portal link.

If you are logged in, you just can vote once. To vote again, clear the poll results.
Click the Pages and Portals Actions icon > Manage > Polls.

Click the Actions icon of poll, and then choose Clear Results.
In the Clear Poll dialog, click Yes.

Polls Manager

Polls Manager task flow creates detailed polls, and lets you view the status of all current polls, perform operations on current polls, as well as publish, analyze, close, and delete all polls.

Go back to page Edit mode.
Create a new Blank page, and call it as Polls Manager.
In the Catalog, click on Polls, and then add a Polls Manager component on the page.

To test, click the Save button, and then click the View Portal link.
Click the Create Poll button to open the Create Poll dialog.
Set the name and click the Create button to create the poll.

Click the Add button, and then choose Add Question.
Set the Question and Row Answer Choices, and click OK.

Click the Save button, and then choose Save to save the poll.
Click the Close button, to go back to list of polls.

Take Polls

Take Polls task flow publishes the most recently published poll or the one you want to display.

Go back to page Edit mode.
Create a new Blank page, and call it as Take Polls.
In the Catalog, click on Polls, and then add a Take Polls component on the page.

To select the poll, click the Edit icon of Take Polls component.
In the Parameters tab of Component Properties: Take Polls window, set the Poll Id property to BestFastFoodRestaurantPoll, and click OK.

To test, click the Save button, and then click the View Portal link.
Note the warning message: “This Poll is not published”. As the poll is not published, you cannot vote.
To publish the poll, go to Polls Manager page, click the Actions icon of BestFastFoodRestaurantPoll and choose Publish.

Go to Take Polls page and vote!

View Poll Results

View Poll Results task flow lets you view poll results.

Go back to page Edit mode.
Create a new Blank page, and call it as Poll Results.
In the Catalog, click on Polls, and then add two View Poll Results components on the page.

Click the Edit icon of first component to select the poll.
In the Parameters tab of Component Properties: View Poll Results window, set the Poll Id property to BestFastFoodRestaurantPoll, and click OK.

Click the Edit icon of second component to select the poll.
In the Parameters tab of Component Properties: View Poll Results window, set the Poll Id property to BestCarPoll, and click OK.

To test, click the Save Button, and then click the View Portal link.

Now, test yourself the various configuration options for the components of poll!
